@smartwatermelon Hey, Andrew! Hope all is well. Would you mind if I picked your brain re: Plex and associated topics?
@skiskamp Happy to answer whatever I can.
@smartwatermelon I have a Drobo5N running Plex and my Sony TV with the Android app. Can't transcode (but I have a dedicated media PC hooked, too, than I can just play with VLC). Looking to upgrade the NAS. Just curious what your set up is? Server and viewer, please. 😁
@skiskamp
Server: Macmini7,1 (Late 2014)
NAS: Synology DS413; 4x 8TB drives in RAID5
Viewer: Apple TV with Plex app
@smartwatermelon So your plex server isn't running on the NAS? I had not considered that. Does that allow transcoding, or do you not bother? Have heard Synologys with AMD chips have problems transcoding. (I was thinking QNAP VS Synology, but I like the thought of the Synology's SHR because it would be simpler for me b/c I have drives in pairs, 2x 14TB, 2x 10TB, and 5x 3TB just laying around.)
@skiskamp correct; NAS is for storage only. Transcoding and networked streaming comes from Plex server running on the Mac.
NAS has two volumes: one for Plex, the other for Time Machine. The whole setup works pretty well for me.
@skiskamp Of course this depends on having a separate always-on machine to run the Plex server, but old Mac Minis are cheap.
@smartwatermelon Copy all. Thanks! I appreciate it! I bought a small Alienware NUC-like computer, years ago, just for the VLC playing of files that wouldn't transcode on my Drobo. I think I'll dabble with a Plex server on it. 👍
