one thing i'm reading but do not understand is the whole fediverse thing. i understand there's several platforms that are interconnected, and you can follow folks on all of these things regardless.

what i don't understand is the .social / xyz.social / name.group and other iterations of 'instances'. one thing at a time i suppose

So each of those is an instance in the fediverse. Each one is a server like Twitter.com or Facebook.com, and they intercommunicate via federation, which just means they use an agreed upon protocol or share messages. Similar to how hotmail.com can send mail to gmail.com.

@nullthegrey i see!! that makes a lot more sense. i was trying to read into this more, but i wasn't coming across anything that was helpful. thanks for clarifying this for me! (:
@swampwitch I'm glad it helped. Do keep in mind I'm mostly just a consumer of the tech and there may be some misunderstandings in my explanation, but I think that's the basic idea.
@nullthegrey completely understandable. it should help at the very least with navigating this and figuring out how everything works in the long run. i appreciate it!
@swampwitch the protocol is called ActivityPub and in theory any site that can use ActivityPub can talk to the fediverse.
