c18.masto.host remains open to new members with an interest in the #18thcentury!

I started this instance on 1 Nov. 2022 in order to establish a home for colleagues in interdisciplinary global #18c studies (with many neighbors joining from #17c and #19c). We had a big push of new members in November and December, along with a donation drive to cover server costs. Early this year, many created placeholder accounts but were not yet ready to dive in. As the community grows, I hope they return!

Still, we have 53 active users and server space (generously donated by members) for up to 500. At present, I am the only admin/mod, but that may change if we grow a great deal. My style is proactive--I assiduously follow threads about the emergence of instances that do not moderate hate and spam, so we see (I hope) vanishingly little. We err on the side of openness to journalism, political content, and sexuality, while, I hope, respecting Fedi norms like #AltText, some CW for distressing stuff.

Most of us were part of the Twitter migration and came at the time of the shifting of some of these priorities, as well as the use of CW to police resistance to white supremacy, so while I hope we are good neighbors, we also tend to be very broad readers who want to learn from and participate in criticizing oppression.

This is a great place to share publications, interesting research finds, favorite books and podcasts, CFPs, talks and conferences, and also hang out, post pet photos, chat.

@carrideen indeed! And just because one starts on, say, mastodon.social, that doesn't mean they have to stay there if they'd prefer to go somewhere else!
That's part of the beauty of the fediverse, you're meant to find your people, and you can explore until you do. (Nothing against mastodon.social!! Just a large example)

@carrideen don’t call it a comeback, baby
