Among all the turmoil about #Twitter throttling itself, people may have missed the funniest #socialmedia news of the weekend: the "decentralized" network #BlueSky being down because of too many people trying to sign in at the same time...

"decentralized"

@David
"Decentralised" is now just being used as a fancy word for "I have no idea what it means but I heard it's the next big thing!"

I am just imagining when they finally open up the protocol for different servers, all the elites who got invited first will stay on the default server, and having "bsky.social" in their handle would be a status symbol, which feels like some class divide... So much for democratising social media.

@chloetse @David are your (or anyone) suggesting that <mydomain>@bsky.social would be bridge between bluesky users & the fediverse, unless you set up your own bluesky server and then it'd be... <mydomain>@<mydomain>?!!?

also, yes, Federated != "decentralized" and yes it feels a lot like they're trying to slap it on things in the same way they say "it's AI" when it's just an "expert system" or whatever.

@masukomi @David not sure what you mean but I am more imagining it being a status symbol in the future. Like if you have bsky.social in your handle, you must have some sort of influence back in twitter because it's so exclusive. Anyone who's someone are in it, and I don't see them having any reason to migrate to different servers when they open up because it is like a checkmark. I just don't like the idea of all the power users concentrated in one server.
