@cabd I cannot tell you how much of a culture shock it was to find that all the organic produce in the UK was 🤬 SHRINK-WRAPPED.
Like, in the US when I lived there, "organic produce" meant misshapen homespun vegetables you put in your re-usable net bag, or made apologetic eyes at the cashier when you used one of the little paper bags provided. The whole point was to avoid getting petrochemicals involved at any stage from soil to stomach.
But in the UK you had to shrink-wrap your organic vegetables because you were certifying that certain pesticides hadn't touched it and gosh how do you keep the pests off when you do that and you're mixing it with non-organic and hey if we just shrink-wrap it none of the pests can get in!!
@spacehobo @cabd that's not a thing.
It might be a thing in some places, but it's not a rule or whatever.
Our fruit and veg definitely aren't shrink wrapped.
@IoanSaid @cabd Yeah, go ahead and entertain everyone with your "That London" takes if you like, but I bet you if you went into a big-name supermarket in your nearest city, you'd find that the only way to get organic broccoli there is to buy it individually shrink-wrapped.
I'm not saying you can't find farmers' markets with the good stuff, but the fact that this exists at all is just a complete 🤯
@spacehobo @cabd nah.
Actually it's not wrapped and you go to the till, weight it, try to find it in the A-Z menu and boom!
Not sure we have farmers markets in our area (we are between two cities after all..) but we do have farm shops too.
We also get random fruit and veg from #Oddbox delivered. They're pretty cool too.
