I think it's important to note that a lot of people confuse the European Convention on Human Rights with the European Court of Human Rights.

And the Government are okay with that confusion for obvious reasons

@davidallengreen Nice detail that the convention itself requires its members to apply it basically to everyone inside their jurisdictions.

Now the obvious loophole would be making NI join the ECHR on its own? And argue it is it's own jurisdiction? (Aren't lawyers from England/Scotland by default not allowed to practice in NI?)

E.g. in the good old USSR, a number of SSR like Ukraine were members of the UN through the USSR but also in their own name.
