I got me BlueSky, Counter.Social, and Mastadon, and watching the Bird app crumble ... I guess I'll keep an eye on all of them and go from there. Mastodon does seem like it has more of a learning curve maybe though.
@NickTheSkydiver I am trying to master it. Counter social is a mess, I have to search for each person I follow’s posts as the Friends screen does not update (last post was me 24 hours ago). Meanwhile on the Community Firehose I see posts by people I follow. I use iPhone to access site, maybe there are issues. Waiting for Bluesky invite.
@NickTheSkydiver It does, absolutely - and that's a good thing. That in itself is one roadblock to bad actors and bots/harassers joining the Fediverse. There are many other safeguards too, but with Mastodon, you have the freedom to completely tailor your social media experience without the terrible T's and C's of the other (dubiously-owned) sites controlling and using your data nefariously. The decentralization is actually the best part of Masto, IMO. I actually like it better than Twitter!
@NickTheSkydiver I've found that following people and boosting is great, but when you start following news orgs, journalists, and SME's for your interests on Masto, that's when your feed transforms into your own personal happy place. And you can follow hashtags!!! That alone has filled out my feed to the point where I don't think I'd ever go back to Twitter, even if Musk disappeared and it went back to normal. I love being my own algorithm!
@SaruNinjaDesu Yeah, one thing BlueSky doesn't seem to have is hashtags, I have to kind of figure out where to get everything. I like having the ability to easily access news, but part of what was cool about Twitter is I kept running into people who were experts on stuff I knew nothing about but was curious about, or just didn't know I should be interested in. Made me better informed, but also a better person largely, most of the time.
@NickTheSkydiver Exactly. Especially with the newest influx of Twitter migrants, there are plenty of those folks over here. I've been trying to expand my list of followed hashtags here lately and my feed is amazing now. Big fan of hashtags.
