Afaik the standard character limit of 500 can be changed, so some people set up Mastodon instances with a higher limit.

Not only are there #Mastodon instances with a raised #CharacterLimit, but there are also other Fediverse projects with higher #CharacterLimits or virtually none at all. For example:
#MissKey: 3,000 characters
#Firefish: 3,000 characters (default)
#Pleroma: 5,000 characters (default)
#Akkoma: 5,000 characters (default)
#Friendica: tens of thousands of characters
#Hubzilla: tens of thousands of characters
#Streams: tens of thousands of characters
And they can all post to your Mastodon timelines. That's the miracle of the Fediverse. And Mastodon does not chop the posts off at 500 characters.
