🧵 Welcome newbies & those trying it out while twitter sorts out its shit show. Here’s some tips that’ll make for an optimal experience here:

1 - use alt text on your images, so people that don’t have the same abilities as you can enjoy your content. Your posts won’t get boosted if it’s missing.

2 - follow lots & post as much as you want. There is no algorithm, you can’t upset it by posting too little or too much and you will have a better experience the more people you follow & boost. 1/5

3 - there are no dm rooms here, and that’s a great thing! You can dm an individual or group if you’d like by using their @ and then selecting ‘mentioned people only’.

4 - when you are searching for specific users or you only want to see images etc you can use filters in your search. You can also create your own types of searches - for instance I have one that filters out boosts and replies so that I only see the user’s posts. You can also filter out words just like mute on Twitter. 2/5

@beaveinflow

re #3 well you can have DM rooms but they require you to provide the room in your location and get up and go into that room to do the DM. too much work if you ask me ;-)

re #4 would love to learn how you create such searches w/o boosts!

@pixelpusher220 oh yes, I find DMing here as a general rule is annoying and I love that 😂

Go to a user profile, click all posts, click the little magnifying glass and create a new filter for no boosts and no replies and apply it whenever you’re looking at someone’s posts and voila!

5 - hashtags are a thing here. It can feel cringey at first, but it’s a great way to connect with the people & things you’re interested in. People as a general rule are nice here & don’t project their horribleness onto you, so you can’t really make a mistake.

6 - use warnings (CW) on things that might upset others if they happen to see it. You can get as granular as you feel is necessary here. People will just unfollow you or mute you if they don’t like your content and not create a fuss. 3/5

7 - you curate your experience here. If you want art, poetry, jokes, music, porn you’ll find it. The idea that Mastodon is PG is a joke, you’ll see what you want to see if you seek it.

8 - people are really cool here, if you have a question just post it. It’s a helpful community and you’ll learn a lot quickly just sending your inquiries out into the fediverse.

9 - If you’re not using mastodon on desktop you’ll need a third party app. Ask around, there are some awesome ones. I use Ivory. 4/5

10 - try not to be an asshole, this is a different experience and once you get past the dependency on dopamine rushes from drama, chaos and porn, you’ll probably love it. This isn’t twitter and that’s a great thing. 💕 5/5
@beaveinflow "Try not to be an asshole" should be rule #1, in any endeavour 😄

@beaveinflow Just a reminder that DMs aren't really DMs here... if you @ someone else in the thread, they will be added to it!

Also they're not encrypted and should be used cautiously for sensitive information.

@willaful thank you for the elaboration! 💕

@willaful @beaveinflow

Thanks for clarifying! I think that's the best thing about this app, is that there is no "real" dms!!

@jamieannmason @willaful it definitely cuts down on the drama I find

That was what I hated about twitter. Unsolicited messages, added into DM rooms. No way. I didn't join a social media app to be bombarded by a bunch of people I didn't know in my messages. Online is fine, stay out of my inbox.

Jamie

@beaveinflow I like no dm bcuz Meta technologies is the DM scam network.
