Some tips for furries coming from Twitter:

1.) Use this to find a furry instance you would like to be on: https://furryfediverse.org/ If you're already on an instance and want to change, you can transfer your account and keep your followers: https://tinyurl.com/4bh9jwkz

2.) Use hashtags so people can find your content better! Hashtags don't demote posts like Twitter.

3.) You can follow hashtags! Want a bunch of fursuits on your feed? Follow the #Fursuit hashtag! Or follow #Furry #Furries #FurryArt

4.) Content warnings are a thing here. If you post rants, suggestive content, or just content you think others may not want to see, please use content warnings!

5.) Use the Local and Federated timelines to see more posts! Local shows folks who are on the same instance as you, while Federated shows a mix of everything.

6.) The instance you are on doesn't matter too terribly much, as each has their own set of rules/guidelines. But you can still follow/reply to people on other instances!

7.) If you are used to using TweetDeck on Twitter and want a similar experience, you can either use "Enable advanced web interface" in Preferences, or use Sengi! https://sengi.nicolas-constant.com/

8.) If you are used to using Twitter web, I recommend using Elk ( https://elk.zone/home ), or Pinafore ( https://pinafore.social/ ) since it looks very similar to it!

9.) For mobile apps, don't use the official Mastodon app. There's a lot of really nice 3rd party apps! https://joinmastodon.org/apps

Sengi

10.) When adding images, please try to add alt text for blind or vision-impaired people. Basically, just write a brief description of what's in the image (for example: "Cute fursuiter standing by a river with his arms extended to the viewer in a cute pose."). These alt texts allow blind or vision-impaired people to know what is going on in the image due to screen readers!

11.) There is no algorithm here. So please boost posts if you want your followers to see them! Boosting helps a lot!

@SleepyChi
Alt text is for more than just the visually impaired!

Because the Fediverse is thousands of different servers run by different individual volunteers, images won't always make it around to everyone all the time.

Alt text helps everyone when there's issues in the network!

@SleepyChi Trying really hard to make #10 a habit ;-;

@stormifolf It's okay! I forgot to do it a lot in the beginning but now it's second-nature.

Some Mastodon apps have an option in them that require you to do it before you post images, which is pretty handy if you tend to forget a lot!

@SleepyChi I kinda like the official app as well, it got a big update recently
@syn That's great news!
@SleepyChi (though I was also using it before that, and didn't really have a problem with it then)
@SleepyChi Pinafore is no longer maintained. Semaphore ( https://semaphore.social/ ) is based on it, and is still maintained.

@rafal06 Thanks for the information, had no clue! Much thanks!
@SleepyChi sounds nice and look good but for one that joined late - how do you follow a #?
