So 30 people were shot, at least 2 killed, last night in Baltimore. Not a word about it in my NY Times feed. That’s our gun culture for ya- it’s just another shooting, why bother reporting on it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ #GunViolence
@LindaVT There’s a very particular kind of mass shooting that frequently get ignored. This kind. One, where mostly black victims are involved, and two, where the shooting is the result of a fight at a party. I think they’re dismissed as a “those people” problem.

@LindaVT Interestingly, shootings at a party are everything people imagined “Wild West” saloon shootings were. Only it was a lot harder to “accidentally” shoot 20 others back then.

And even then, Americans blamed the alcohol, and decidedly not the guns.

(Though they weren’t necessarily wrong in that. And some towns did in fact try to impose strict gun bans.)

@LindaVT this is the first I’m hearing about this and it’s scary. This happened like 15 min from me.

Actually, and oddly, BBC radio announced it in their headlines around 6 am. No details, but enough for me to search elsewhere.

@LindaVT

I saw the story from other news sources early this morning at news.google.com.

Baltimore Shooting: At Least 2 Dead and 28 Wounded at a Block Party

The police were searching for a suspect or suspects in the shooting, which happened early on Sunday at a block party in the city’s southern neighborhood of Brooklyn.

@LindaVT I heard about it here on Mastodon, thanks to @w7voa.
@LindaVT Maryland has seen a 20% increase in vehicular deaths, in the past 2 yrs as well as 20% increase in injuries. But since most of it happens outside of Baltimore City no one mentions it. Our former governor took every opportunity to blame Baltimore for its own problems, but never was asked why he was not doing more for traffic crashes. More than 500 deaths in 2021 & more than 28,000 injuries.
