A podcast I occasionally listen to has 5 male hosts. I can't tell them apart. I can't articulate their individual POVs. I am sure they're all friends. But every voice should have a *listener-perceivable* role and a goal. Character isn't just for fiction shows. This is the craft.

@tomwebster @grammargirl Sure, but I also don’t want excessive artifice in my podcasts. I like the podcasts I listen to largely because I feel a direct connection to the participants, something this medium seems especially good at. I don’t want people to play characters.

Perhaps what’s needed instead is more diversity of real voices, rather than similar people choosing the play different characters.
