we're all in agreement Google pivoted from "search engine" to "mafia" a while ago, yes?

search results for "Vimeo OTT" show 3 paid listings from competitors, the first real result is (way) below the fold. I guess Vimeo didn't pay for protection this month.

speaking of, here's google result #12 for "fasterthanlime"
ok fine I gave https://kagi.com/ $25 for a month of unlimited searches, let's see how good it is now
Kagi Search - A Premium Search Engine

Better search results with no ads. Welcome to Kagi (pronounced kah-gee), a paid search engine that gives power back to the user.

@fasterthanlime btw you can use https://sex.rijndael.cc for free (but parsers break sometimes)

@fasterthanlime I am... Awaiting the review

@fasterthanlime I once heard from a person working at Google an explanation for why they will never have a paid subscription.

The issue is that different users has different values. Most users are worth very little, but others are worth a ton. For example, they could sell an ad campaign targeting fortune 500 CEOs. This would be worth tens of tousands. Way more than their ad-free subscription could ever produce.

This is not to excuse the behaviour, but it did give me a new perspective.

@fasterthanlime I’ve been very happy with my 2000 searches / month pleb tier. Feels the same as coming to Mastodon after years of ad-based social media, such a breath of fresh air.
@ilmai I don’t see a pricing tier for 2000 searches on their website. Perhaps, you meant 1000 searches? Or, maybe they have revised their pricing since you got the subscription. 🤔🤔🤔
@whereistejas ah yeah that was a typo sorry
