Halftime- AUS 32 JPN 44.
Opals know they’re in a game now- Japan turned up the defensive pressure, holding Australia without a field goal for more than 7 minutes while reeling off 16 unanswered points themselves. The Akatsuki Five went 7/10 from deep in that stretch, Yamamoto Mai with 12 on 4/6 at the break.
Alice Kunek (8) and Darcee Garbin (7) lead Australia’s scoring, but Maddi Rocci has looked good off the bench.
Final: Australia 66 Japan 91. A lot for the Aussies to look at as it only gets tougher from here: the road to the final now goes through Korea and China. Japan goes 16/25 from deep after quarter time and their stifling defence completely threw the Opals off (15 turnovers for the game, 16/45 FG after 1QT).
Yamamoto finished with 19 while Monica Okoye led Japan with 20. Maddi Rocci had 12 to lead the home team.
