@24panels never cared for the 80s remake (found it gross), though not seen the 50s version. Both versions (as well as the 80s remake's sequel) are currently on (HBO) Max in the US. (Barring another WB Discovery content purge... given said streaming service, you're probably better off buying the films on DVD/Blu-ray...)

The 1960 Hollywood writers' strike has come up lately with the *current* writers' strike. The 1960 one was in part over residuals for TV airings of movies. Apparently whatever new tech comes along, A) Hollywood treats it as Public Enemy #1 (off the top of my head: television itself, cable TV, VCRs, DVRs, DVDs, the internet, streaming services) and B) tries to cheat creators (granted, that goes back probably to the silent era, but...).

I assume the 80s remake was set in Canada too?

There's an actual "Fast and the Furious" series on Netflix: an animated series featuring the teenage nephew of Vin Diesel's character.

I gather there's no worse "Curse" film than "Curse of the Pink Panther?"

"No wonder this teleporter failed, it says 'made in Japan." "What're you talking about, Doc? All the best teleporters are made in Japan." 🙂

@24panels "The American Way?" But this film's set in Canada! Assuming there's such a thing as "the Canadian Way"... 🙂

"Star Trek" seems to be what set the standard for teleportation in media, including the name "teleporter." Recall reading a TNG book where the 20th century businessman from the first season returns, and mentions to the crew the movie "The Fly" when being transported.

@24panels Of all things, the 1950s "Duck Dodgers" cartoon, parodying sci-fi, called their teleporters "evaporators" in one scene; "disintegrating pistols" were the weapons Daffy/Marvin used. (Porky of course had an "integrating pistol" to fix up Daffy...)

"Francois" is a name I've heard a bit lately---rewatching "The Owl House," where it's the name King gives his stuffed rabbit. (He also calls a later would-be "minion" Jean-Luc, going with French names for some reason.)

@dtgeek There has to be a dart board in Hollywood writers rooms which is how they decide which character must have the name of Francois or Jean.

@24panels in King's case, he thinks he's the "king of demons", despite looking like a cute, doglike demonic creature, though doesn't explain his French names for his "minions" in-context. The other names on the show tend to be standard North American English ones (Eda, Lilith, Augustus/"Gus", Hunter, Willow, etc.) or Spanish (the lead character, Luz)?
