So imagine... A Steam OS Device program. If an ODM would:

* Use a standardized AMD Zx Series chip
* Have one Xbox-360 controller device registering into the OS via on-board USB
* MUST ALSO have a Touchscreen
* Have at LEAST X hours of battery life (can run Half-Life 2 at max spec for 5 hours?)
* Have either "at LEAST 720p" or "at most 1080p"
* Provide an exclusive SKU that is to run SteamOS (ODM can re-label the device with another name, but that SKU and branding would be Steam-exclusive)

->

Then VALVe would let them "use the SteamOS Devices Branding" and build a Steam Devices Ecosystem. Yes, it's basically the Steam Consoles all over again, but now that they've proven there:

* is a bloody market
* is a functioning market ripe for investment
* is an appetite for SteamOS

They are in a FAR BETTER PLACE than, uh, "last time".

@root Polish it a bit more and wait for the next jump in performance from AMD. Maybe an better upscaler for every game. Then they release SteamOS with a little bonus for ODMs and that would be a profit sharing, like 2 to 5 % of their cut. That would be a major incentive to ODMs to build good and cheap Steam Decks and Steam Machines for the home. Additionally they should lower the cut for Linux/Proton sales for devs. That is similar to what Epic is doing to push EGS and Unreal.

@kragil being a tech head I was only thinking about the hardware and software.

* The ODM share cut is brilliant if for no other reason than if the SteamOS ecosystem blows up... "The rising tide lifts us all" and shit
* Yeah encouraging the devs to test with Proton or Native Linux and get a bigger share could be good, but they had YEARS and they did fuck all on that. I wouldn't hope.
