Vision Pro and the challenge of 3D movies

(Apple) No matter what you think of the Vision Pro headset or 3D movies, it’s become apparent over the last few weeks that a lot of people need a primer on 3D, stereoscopic movies. Love them …

I’ll never forget working on this movie - but not this promo they put together.

G Force 3D Experience

@joesteel The masses were crying out for these guinea pigs to come right out into the audience. You made that happen.
@joesteel OMG. 🥰 G-Force is one of the all-time great films featuring guinea pigs! And definitely the best where guinea pigs are the main stars of the show. (Actually, I can’t think of another film in that category.) #wheek
@joesteel However fantastic the Vision Pro experience is for stereo content, I can’t see it being practical for non-Apple content to be shot in Apple’s Spatial Video format. There just won’t be enough demand (even presuming the format can be manipulated with existing editing tools).
@michaelgemar I don’t believe any shows or movies will be shot in a unique format. I think there was a misunderstanding, or miscommunication with the source and that it will be shot like any other Hollywood stereoscopic production would be. Apple does have a particular way they want to distribute stereo video content, but even that is just a logical extension of existing technology. I do recommend checking out that Apple developer video.
@joesteel So Spatial Video is just Apple’s term for what the Vision Pro captures, and not an actual format per se?
@michaelgemar the spatial video that the headset captures is different from stereoscopic video. There is allegedly dimension to the stuff recorded by the headset where the vantage point can be changed. You don’t alter your vantage point with stereoscopic movies because it will only ever have 2 views, left and right. Journalists saw stuff captured by the headset which was distinct from their preview of Avatar in the headset. Just separate things.
@joesteel But it sounds like Monsterverse is being shot in “Spatial Video”, or is that a misunderstanding?
@michaelgemar I believe that is a misunderstanding
@joesteel Ah, so Apple is shooting some of its Apple TV+ content in stereo, but not in a new format. That makes more sense to me.
