SAN DIEGANS FEEL RUSHED, MISLED BY SDPD AS ADVISORY BOARD VOTES NO ON... | Left Coast Right Watch

San Diego’s privacy advisory board voted against recommending an SDPD surveillance tech proposal.

@MusiqueNow this was a fantastic article by Orellana - such a thorough overview of what’s been happening up until last week’s vote. I’m hoping that obvious desire of San Diegans to stop these 2 surveillance programs will matter to the City Council but with the funds already budgeted, I’m not feeling confident

@inarticulatequilter

Do you think that ongoing pressure, if it's really intense will stop this surveillance stuff?

@MusiqueNow I’m not an expert, but my hope is public pressure will blunt its worse aspects, maybe slow it. Nothing is going to stop it completely because the tech has just evolved too far and police have shown no interest in voluntarily not adopting it — what’s your take?

@inarticulatequilter

I know this sounds incredibly naive, but I always think (hope, maybe?) intense public pressure is everything.

If they got clobbered with phone calls, emails, protests, if they see progressives running candidates that are against surveillance, the 🐖🐖 & the govt will realise, ' Uh oh. I can be voted out' ' I can lose my career', ' Our city's getting a bad reputation for being Big Brother, we better quit doing this shit'.

But there needs to be A LOTot of ppl fighting back

@MusiqueNow I don’t think that’s naive — hope is resistance too

I was going to reply that SD politicians seem particularly impervious to pressure these days, but honestly? Gloria got his homeless ban, sure, but that man _melted down_ from the public pressure. And Whitburn buckled under a single question from Montgomery-Steppe!

I think you are right — there is hope on a lot of these issues if we keep at it

Would you feel comfortable telling me where in SD you are? I’m Carmel Mtn Ranch

@inarticulatequilter

I'm not in SD, actually

@MusiqueNow sorry for all the local names then, you probably had no idea who I was talking about!

Thanks for posting the original article though — I know whats happening here is happening in lots of other places and it’s important we all stay connected. Good luck within your community!

@inarticulatequilter
Thanks. We need all the good luck we can get here.

Yeah, I think we need to be a #globalcitizenry mentality and we need to look out for each other internationally, as best we can.
