@Thapsyrensays I prefer building new ones and deligitamizing old ones. 🀘

@Thapsyrensays [edit, i originally put alt text for the image here because for some reason it looked like the image didn't have one. on second look, it does. apologies!]
@duesenklipper You could have kept it! Sometimes my alt tag fails and you may not have been the only one who didn't see it immediately.
@Thapsyrensays what systems
@frozencat @Thapsyrensays
How about real property systems, for one.
The consequences of red-lining can still be seen in current neighborhood patterns. Black neighborhoods receive less investment and more policing than white neighborhoods. Black-owned property is more likely to be seized for highway projects and urban renewal, to the advantage of white developers.
@Thapsyrensays I agree completely but I don’t know how.

@Artlover23

It's hard to see stuff in your blind spots (is for me, anyway). Maybe try paying attention to state/ local politics and vote for politicians doing things like getting rid of cash bail.

@Thapsyrensays

@Thapsyrensays You are still expecting people to act against their own self interests. It’s never going to happen.

@Abazigal @Thapsyrensays

But here's the thing with racist structures β€” they're not in the "best interest" of white people are either. Likewise, patriarchy is awful for men. That doesn't mean there is not (obvious, powerful) benefit (especially, surprise, for those at the top of the power pyramid) but there is also cost, loss, and damage.

@mattdm @Abazigal @Thapsyrensays Well, that benefit is really mostly for those at the top. Average people hardly benefit at all, so there's nothing against average person's best interests in it.
@Abazigal @Thapsyrensays but it is in our interest. Creating a better society for everyone is something we all benefit from.

@shine For context, I come from a country (Singapore) where racial harmony is implemented as a top-down approach. It’s taught in schools, it’s enforced by law, we still encounter racist incidents, but at least it’s clear where we stand from a policy perspective.

My opinion is that racism in the US is structural, and structural problems often don’t have individual solutions. Feel free to disagree, but you are basically asking the foxes to go against their nature and not eat the hens.

@Thapsyrensays @AliceMarshall I mean, I think it’s good to be demanding a fair amount of SHAME about the whole ancestors all doing crimes against humanity…
@migriverat @Thapsyrensays @AliceMarshall No. OP is correct. Everyone should be appalled at how poorly we can treat each other, but you should only be ashamed of suffering you had power to alleviate.
@birwin @Thapsyrensays @AliceMarshall I think I can pretty readily feel ashamed of shit my culture has done
@migriverat @Thapsyrensays @AliceMarshall
Maybe use the money the ancestors gained by abuse as reparations?
@Thapsyrensays But why would anybody want to dismantle a system from which they profit, no matter how inhumane and brutal that system may be? People don't give up their privilege willingly.
@Thapsyrensays Yeah, but what "dismantling the oppressive system" actually means, like in practice?
@Thapsyrensays I am white and recognize my white privilege. My ancestors were slaveholders - we now recognize they were wrong to do that.

@Thapsyrensays I think it's important for people to realize that there are two forms of apology: "I am sorry for what I did" and "I am SORROWFUL that you experienced that." We can apologize without it actually being about taking blame for what we didn't do.

I AM sorry that people have suffered under white supremacy. I don't need to feel GUILTY to be SYMPATHETIC towards people who have suffered.
