Culture is derived from how and what people worship. Anthropologically speaking, religion and culture are nearly synonymous. #zahnd #books #theology #culture

@VersoAlto This is overstating the case enormously.

In my anthropology course, we defined culture as "shares knowledge and experience used to interpret experience and generate behavior". Some of that knowledge is metaphysical, but a whole lot of it is not.

@VersoAlto Nothing about worshipping Jesus teaches you about what time of day the water will be warm or whether the car horn is only for emergencies or what the normal serving size of coffee is, to choose just a few examples from my cross-cultural life.
@WordyAnchorite There’s obviously more context to the quote that I pulled— but interestingly in a 2021 research paper there were indications that particular religious traditions predicted a unique pattern of cultural traits. https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2109650118
@VersoAlto That study says there's similarity between people of the same religion across countries, but it's not as big of an effect as being from the same country. That's a far cry from being "synonymous" as the quote has it.
