The Brooklyn Public Library issues free library cards to kids across the US who have had their access to books limited by bans and censorship. Now the NYPL system is facing over $36 million in budget cuts.

Libraries are for everyone. Let’s keep it that way.

Please urge city leaders to protect and expand the budget to fund public libraries by sending a letter today. If you value everything Brooklyn Public Library adds to our borough, now is the time to speak up.

Libraries are civic marvels.

Besides lending books and providing internet access, the Chicago Public Library lets you check out fishing poles, telescopes, cameras, knitting supplies, sewing machines, puzzles, tools, cooking equipment, a (model) human skull, sheet music, instruments, toys, museum passes, laptops, wifi hotspots, craft kits, seeds.

You can book meeting rooms or 3D printers. Some branches have teachers on site for homework help. Story time for kids, literacy programs for adults.

Very impressive offerings list and a great example of how civic services can benefit the community! 😍

@mcnees Seriously? Call the legislators we must put an end to this! - says #capitalism.
@mcnees A library here in MA also lets you check out wheelchairs.

'Fascists HATE this one weird societal trick'

@mcnees Yeah, it's pretty cool. Ours offers stuff like this, too.
@mcnees when my family was on a road trip and my kid needed Internet and a quiet place for a remote session, I always check the nearest library. Never disappointed.
@mcnees Beloved community--that's the phrase that came to mind reading this. And I think it's really appropriate when it comes to libraries and their function in society.
@mcnees @jewishreader Great example of why we need to fight to preserve public libraries and what they offer. God forbid that they go away and that we have to go through the likes of Amazon and B&N to have any access to books!
@mcnees Carbondale wants $35 bucks for ONE year of library privileges! That’s not going to work! How I loathe capitalism…
@mcnees in my town our Florida library gives state park passes…
@mcnees It is truly a miracle we still have libraries, I love them so much. I would love to see so many other things added to this list: cars, tools, musical instruments…
