The Brooklyn Public Library issues free library cards to kids across the US who have had their access to books limited by bans and censorship. Now the NYPL system is facing over $36 million in budget cuts.

Libraries are civic marvels.

Besides lending books and providing internet access, the Chicago Public Library lets you check out fishing poles, telescopes, cameras, knitting supplies, sewing machines, puzzles, tools, cooking equipment, a (model) human skull, sheet music, instruments, toys, museum passes, laptops, wifi hotspots, craft kits, seeds.

You can book meeting rooms or 3D printers. Some branches have teachers on site for homework help. Story time for kids, literacy programs for adults.

@mcnees when my family was on a road trip and my kid needed Internet and a quiet place for a remote session, I always check the nearest library. Never disappointed.

@mcnees @jewishreader Great example of why we need to fight to preserve public libraries and what they offer. God forbid that they go away and that we have to go through the likes of Amazon and B&N to have any access to books!
