What app do you use for Mastodon? - Lemmy.world

I’ve been wanting to check out Mastodon and a good app helps me be more engaged. My issue is that there are lots of interesting apps so I don’t which one to pick! Which one do you like and why? Android is preferred, but feel free to suggest iOS apps for others to use. Websites are also fine, but I’d like to install it as a PWA if possible.

Tusky is my current preference, but have tried Megalodon, Mastodon and Fedilab. I couldn't get with Fedilab, the font sizes in particular were never right.

Mammoth for iOS. I prefer it over Ivory which is crazy since I LOVED Tweetbot.

I use Ice Cubes on ios

I find Moshidon and Fedilab to be the best on android and Mona and Trunks app on ios. On Linux I use Tuba and on Web I like multi column layout of Mastodeck.
I’ve been using Mona on iOS for a while now and I feel it’s the most feature filled app. It’s been great!
Yes. The customisation possibilities of Mona are incredible. It’s my daily driver. I love the columned layout of Trunks app on iPad though.
Tusky works well for me on Android.
I like Tusky, but the web interface is pretty good on mobile too!

I’ve been an Ivory Stan for a while, lol. But ngl, I’m starting to get itchy since updates have slowed significantly. Other apps have gotten lots of other QOL features, or he’ll even some basic features, in a much quicker time. But I’ve paid for Ivory already, and don’t really want to pay for another.

My options are more limited too cuz it’s a requirement for there to be some sync to a desktop app. Not too many others that do that (Mona is the first that comes to mind that is in “second” place for me).

Came here to say the exact same thing
what sort of features is ivory missing?
I’ve been using Metatext. I like the stats on trending topics
Its UI is also so clean, reminds me of Apollo
I find the mobile interface (the browser) to be really good, at least in comparison to Lemmy.
@runswithjedi I use Fedilab on Android and it works great. Very happy with it.

Tusky is best for those who are newer to Mastodon. Visually it's very clean, straightforward to use, and largely free of bugs (it helps to have been around for so many years).

For users more familiar with Mastodon, I'd go with Fedilab. Despite a few bugs, it's the most customizable option, with so many features you can tweak to your own tastes.

Fedilab and Tusky are quite good - the so-called official app lacks functions.
Toot! for iOS. It lets you add servers you don’t have an account on, and then you can interact easily on that server with any server’s account you’re logged into. I have 2-3 accounts based on different things I’m interested in so my followers don’t get a complete mishmash from me if they don’t want to, and this setup makes it so easy for me to interact and browse as if it’s all the same account.
Moshidon on Android
Check out a Calckey instance (I think it's a significantly better UX compared to Mastodon, and they federate) and their PWA. It's pretty good. But there's a list of native apps for it here: https://calckey.org/apps/

Firefish Social

Interesting, I hadn't heard of Calckey. Is Calckey the same thing as Mastodon?

In one of the Android app's listing, I saw a screenshot for a mastodon.social post. Is Calckey and Mastodon kind of like KBin and Lemmy?

Yes, Calckey is to Mastodon as kbin is to Lemmy. Different pieces of website software that do similar things and cross-communicate.

Calckey is less popular, but is developing at a faster rate, and is much more open to community feedback.

Tusky on my Android.
I really like Radiant on iOS so far. The design is similar to that if Apollo.
Fedilab is my choice to go
I do like Fedilab's comment thread visualization, with multi-level indentation so you can easily see all the sub-threads within the replies.
How is this not the default I dont understand.
I use subway tooter. It is feature-packed and have strong tool to crossposting across different accounts. But its interface is not that pretty and confusing for first timer. Not recomended for casual users. But if you run several mastodon account at once, it has great tools to make your life easier.

I like Fedilab. It's open source and supports other accounts like Pixelfed, Peertube, Friendica, and is planning to add Calckey. I also like how it has colored lines to show deeper threads.

I've also tried out Tusky and a couple of forks of the offical app like Moshidon and Megalodon and they all seem pretty good.

@runswithjedi I don't, I just use the web UI, both on desktop and on my phone.
I use Tusky. Have tried several others, but always came back to Tusky as it fits my needs perfectly.
I like Tusky. It just works, but it also has a nice feature that lets you open posts from whichever accounts you have set up with a couple of taps. In the official app you have to switch accounts and then find the post again, which is a pain. I have two Mastodon accounts so this feature is convenient to me.
I also like Tusky for Mastodon because you can also use it to open up your Pixelfed account.
I wish it had support for Lemmy accounts, too!
Another Tusky user here. I like it a lot.
On my Android 'phone I just use the official app from the Play Store, it fulfills my needs. There are no ads, which was the reason I wouldn't use the official app for Twitter.
When I was on Android I could never find one I really loved. Trunks came the closest. On iOS Ivory and Mona are both amazing. Mona has a one time purchase so if you’re allergic to subscriptions that’s the way to go.
I use Tusky on my phone but Trunks on my eink tablet. Really none of the apps are "good" on eink, but Trunks is the most usable.
I used to use tusky when I made my account way back and I remember that being good. After returning this year I decided to buy fedilab and it's very good.
I use the official Mastodon app. It’s pretty good, stable, and fast.

The official web client works very well as a PWA on mobile.

The official native apps are also an option, but are controversial for a number of reasons. I don’t use it, but from what I’ve heard Tusky is a very popular alternative.

I want to second using the website as a pwa. It works quite well.
Tusky for me as well. It works just fine imo.
I love Phanpy. Super smooth, love the trending carousel, just feels great to use.
based on a recommendation from here, I use connect for lemmy. I find it much more stable than jerboa
Question is about Mastodon tho
fair enough, for mastodon i just use the stock mastodon app from the play store. for what i use it for, casual browsing and boosting posts, it works perfectly well.
Tusky has been serving me well on Android

I use Megalodon. It’s a fork of the official Android app but with the missing features (like hashtag following) added.

But as others have mentioned, the official web app is great too and works as PWA
