Catton is imo one of the unfairly forgotten narrative history writers. He writes clear engaging prose with flashes of poetry. The portrait he paints of US Grant is of a general whose greatest asset was his utter unflappability. Being a fan of Grant, I'm biased, but the story of how he calmly, surely, wrests control of the Mississippi from the Rebels is a gripping one. #civilwar #history #military
