You sign up. You wait for the email to confirm your email address. It takes a long time, so you do something else. The mail arrives, you click the link. It has expired.

What you end with: you have an unconfirmed account you can't login with. The login credentials don't work. But resetting your password doesn't help since it's unconfirmed. And you can't reuse your username OR your email address, because "they are already in use".
