PSA: Jeri - Seven of Nine - Ryan is active on the fediverse! - Star Trek: Website

Just in case you didn’t know … she’s on mastodon, has probably been here longer than you, and is active (she once actually replied to me!!!). https://mastodon.world/@JeriLRyan [https://mastodon.world/@JeriLRyan]

It seems that many Star Trek authors, writers, and producers etc. set up Mastodon accounts when then expected to be leaving Twitter.

Some of those accounts are being kept semi active but don’t have active followers. I understand that following a Mastodon account from Lemmy isn’t as feasible as the other way. I’m wondering if those members might be more active if they knew there was a community here that’s interested to engage.

All to say that it would be great if

— we could have guidance on how to follow them from here if possible (rather than creating separate Mastodon accounts;

—the mods here could message them to let them know there’s a new and active community here interested to engage.

A couple of thoughts on this:

  • I don't think it's possible to follow Mastodon accounts through Lemmy - at least not yet. To be honest, though, after playing with their interoperability, in my opinion it's best to just set up a Mastodon account and use it as a separate platform. The formats are different enough that you'll be grateful for the more Twitter-like UI experience.

  • I'm personally not big on messaging actors or other series personnel without a very specific reason. These are personal social media accounts, and not everyone appreciates extra "noise" in their feed. Those who are interested will likely find out about us organically, and we would always reach out if the timing seemed right and we thought they would be receptive.

  • I don’t think it’s possible to follow Mastodon accounts through Lemmy

    i can get to this, but it doesn't allow me any kind of subscribe/follow and it shows zero posts, which is obviously not true.

    It’s showing zero posts because she has never interacted with a lemmy community, or at least done so while your instance was subscribed to it.

    This is instance visibility, a weirdness that affects all fediverse instances.

    so there is no way i could just watch that mastodon feed in my lemmy feeds? i am not interested in commenting or re~~tweet~~mastodonting or anything like that.

    No. Lemmy doesn’t allow you to follow mastodon accounts or any personal accounts, incl lemmy accounts, for that matter. Similarly, following a lemmy community from mastodon, while possible, generally doesn’t work well.

    Kbin provides parallel interfaces to both threaded and microblog content that works well.

    Generally though, it’s an unsolved problem trying to unify the whole fediverse into a single interface.

    It will be interesting to see if lemmy will evolve to enable some sort of user based following. At the moment, keeping things simple with community subscriptions is part of how lemmy is developed.

    thank you
