#CostOfPrivacy has increased in #Belgium as #LoyaltyCards get creepy. In the past there was a paper form where you could put bogus info, or not fill it at all. #Intermarché has no paper form! You must insert your ID chip card into a machine that demands email address & mobile phone number. If you refuse to link your sensitive identity & contact info to your card, they cancel it.
@expat you MUST do Nothing. The only people in belgium entitled to ask for your ID is the police. It is unlawful to ask for private information you do not want to disclose in order for you to make a purchase. (your #rijksregisternummer / Citizen ID is a VERY sensitive piece of data) Mediamarkt tries this with me every time. I giggle and politely decline.
@knightwise I appreciate the tip. I guess it’s not a simple case. #Intermarché does not require ID as a purchase condition, but rather as a condition to receive a discount. Is that legal? They give an ID-free option to use the loyalty card but you must use their website & solve a CAPTCHA. AFAIK, there is no way for an offline customer to activate the loyalty card without supplying a beID.
@knightwise I noticed a similar thing with Electro Depot in Evere. They demand ID if you want a warranty with a product, but the warranty is optional.
@expat Normally your ‘ticket’ #kassaticket is enough proof of purchase to validate your waranty (2 years for consumers by european standards). If you lose your ticked and you payed by credit or debetcard THAT statement can also be invoked as proof-of-purchase.
@knightwise Indeed the EU implied warranty is obligatory. But I think Electro Depot is extending that in some way in exchange for showing your ID card.
