I'm filling out the paperwork for my name change. I had been planning on changing my first name to Rosalie but going by Rose day-to-day, which I've been doing for a while. Is it pretentious to change my legal name to something and go by a shortened form? Should I just change it to Rose and be done with it? #trans #transnames
It's fine, do what you want.

Thanks everyone for the responses! I’m not sure how to end the poll early, but I took your advice and went with what I really wanted. The forms are filed, just waiting for them to schedule a date. Some day in the near future I will legally be Rosalie 🄰

@rose

Totally fine to have to have a longer legal name but go by a shorter nickname in your daily life

@rose

I don't think that's pretentious AT ALL. Thinking about how potential shortenings work is like, part of how folks pick names when they do it the usual way!

Besides, you gotta live with that name for a long time so you wanna make sure it's what YOU want.

@rose my name is Benjamin. I go by Ben. Do what you want!

@rose

Also worth pointing out that if you have a short name (like mine) people will always be asking you what it's short for so you may as well do what you want lol

@rose Also, both Rosalie and Rose are lovely names.
@rose I have an Aunt Rosalie who goes by Rose and an Uncle Dick (Richard) whom everyone calls Rosie. Do what makes you happy.
@rose I changed my name to Ada, and I regret not changing it to Adaline so much so that I'm likely going to change my name again, this time to Adaline.

I won't ever be Adaline in day to day conversation, but i want to have a more "formal" version of my name
@rose Nah. I legally changed my name to a long form, and day-by-day go by a shortening of my name. When I hear my full first name, I immediately know that stuff is serious.

@rose My legal name is Arthur, but I prefer to go by Art (how cool is "Art Smart"). But it's really a pain to have a legal name that's different from what I prefer to be called

If you prefer to be called Rose, then I would make that the legal name. You'll be glad you did.
