"In a tweet reply, Elon Musk says 'cis' or 'cisgender' are 'slurs' on Twitter and the 'contemptible creep' who 'manufactured' the term 'has serious problems'."

Whatever one thinks of these terms, I think the one thing we can all agree on is that there is indeed a contemptible creep with serious problems here.

@thurrott it's also deliberatively provocative to create controversy (and presumably traffic) at the expense of a sensitive issue for many. 👎
@thurrott What is there even to think about these terms? “Cis” means “on the same side”, “trans” means “on the other side”, as I learned in my organic chemistry class in 1995. It’s Latin. If Elon doesn’t like it, he can build a Time Machine and go lodge a complaint with the ancient Romans. Maybe they’ll feel like putting up with his bullshit.
@JonR no one ever asked straight people if they were ok being called this, thus slur. I don't agree with Musk on much, but he's spot-on here.
@firewyre You a bot, bro? Cisgender means the opposite of transgender. Like heterosexual means the opposite of homosexual. In what universe is that a slur?
@JonR In a universe where people insist on being called “normal” and mean it as “correct.” Because it’s about making affirming themselves while hurting others.

@JonR @firewyre

Musk is a first order tool but TBF almost every time I've seen the term "cis" used online it was clearly intended as a slur.

For a parallel example, just because the word "retarded" is actually a medical term doesn't mean that it's not being used inappropriately the vast majority of the time, to the point that it's not often used in medicine anymore because of the negative/hateful connotations of the word.

@raitchison @firewyre I have never seen the word cisgender used as a slur. Nor do I know of any other term with the same meaning that could be used instead.
@raitchison @firewyre Do you have an alternate suggestion to express the same concept as cisgender?

@JonR @firewyre

I'm not sure we even need one, at least outside of an academic/scientific context.

Another parallel: Some people who are born with extra digits which is described medically as Polydactyly (or hyperdactyly). I'm not aware of a term, even in a medical/scientific context for people who do not have extra digits.

@firewyre @raitchison Buddy, I’m a psychologist and I specify peoples gender identity in my documentation every damn day. Out of a caseload of about 40, about five of my patients are transgender, so yes, I will be specifying cisgender and transgender. I have literally never seen cis used as a slur and I believe that this is substantially made up, like the bullshit about litter boxes in schools. I’m done with this conversation now.
@thurrott Being a social media addicted millennial, it was hard but I had to abandon my Twitter account. Let the pigs have their pigsty, I can't lay in that mud any longer.
@thurrott it would be nice to stop focusing on all this nonsense and perhaps focus on the real troubles of this country.
@andrewccm I feel like he is one of the real troubles of this country.
@thurrott How did you feel when everything that didn’t fit a certain side of the political narrative was censored though? I personally feel like the absolute corruption in government right now and the lack of media focus is what is most important to me. Twitter had its day being involved in that. For me, I just think something’s are just out of control and many things are just distractions. Good thing we can all have our own opinions though.
@thurrott Someone should start a loud debate about transuranics. I'll bring the popcorn.😬
@thurrott "who 'manufactured' the term" HA! Someone clearly hasn't been reading their ancient Roman Republic history... Not that that's much of a surprise, given how ill-informed he is in many other areas.
@thurrott I don't agree. Why should I agree?
