Solution mainly reached by figuring out which letters were not used. In particular, the second word had almost no letters in common with the first word, except for the vowel which I knew was wrong but was required so that I could form a word containing all the letters I wanted to eliminate. It paid off, and I could tell which of the four consonants was in the secret word, so I was able to guess it on the third try.
