The Sierra Club has decided to shut down its student-run arm, the Sierra Student Coalition.

The SSC taught me basically everything I know about politics. So I wrote a bit about what it taught me, and what the Sierra Club seems to have forgotten.

A eulogy for the Sierra Student Coalition

The Sierra Club has decided to dissolve its student-run arm, the Sierra Student Coalition (SSC). I think its a disastrous, short-sighted decision, made by an organization that has lost its bearings. But I’m not a member of the Sierra Club’s Board of Directors anymore, and haven’t been for over a decade. Decisions like this are mine to mourn, not mine to make.

The Future, Now and Then
@davekarpf great article about the sierra student coalition. I give a lot of credit to Oberlin for shaping a lot of my values but I gotta give Dave and the SSC credit for introducing me to so many of the concepts and principles I still find myself using and admiring.
@charleshaine thanks Chuck. Brings back memories…
@davekarpf so many memories. also if I remember correctly you had a lot of the werbach “I see a thing needs to exist and it doesn’t exist so I’m going to make it happen” energy even if you aren’t necessarily a fulltime werbach. I always found that very inspirational.

@charleshaine I think the difference was in scale. Like, I was good at saying “there are two things. Let’s build a bridge between them,” but not saying “there are two things. Why not have 10,000 of them? Let’s do that!”

(And thanks)
