the one upside of the giant corporations tearing the fediverse to shreds is we can all just finally stop using the computer. im sure youre also ready to throw in the towel. youve tried so many times havent you. we all have. but nothing can be done. nothing good can come of it. nothing good can come of the computer
every time they try to connect all the computers together the result is either profoundly evil, extremely tedious, or both. "oh this time we'll connect all the computers together... but in a Nice way" huh they've fooled us enough times haven't they. yet we still take them, the people who connect computers together, at their word
@jk for some reason jn my head I read that in that one pre-AI really popular “British male” voice synth
@jk honestly that's not really an upside, if anything i will do the same thing i did before using my computer much : reading the same books over and over again while being too anxious to meet anyone irl
@jk i'm just moving back to the terminal. if it can't exist in a little box that shows me text it's too much for me.

@lori @jk can I interest you in my curses based mastodon client?

Just kidding, no mastodon client, but I did contribute to one for status.net.

@jk The 6502 is where we should have just threw in the towel really.

I can dig a good text adventure.

@jk I made an https://omg.lol account and hang out with like 20 nice people. 😀 big-ass social media is fucked
omg.lol - A lovable web page and email address, just for you

Treat yourself to an awesome web address, a devastatingly gorgeous profile page, a stellar email address, and tons more

@jk the enemy is not technology but capitalism
@tillianisafox technology doesn't exist
@jk I’m out of the loop. Can someone elaborate what they mean about giant corps tearing the fediverse apart?

@avyrla @jk Facebook is going to announce P92 as Threads (not to be confused with Instagram Threads) somewhat soon, and it will supposedly federate over ActivityPub. People are tearing each other apart over whether corporate instances should be accepted before Facebook has even publicly announced Threads.

I mostly agree with the anti-corporation crowd; the Fediverse should not be made profitable, and Facebook certainly is not extending the olive branch, but rather pointing a gun. Facebook also has a huge track record of bad-faith moves and EEE. However, new users may not be a bad thing, so long as they are able and willing to make the jump to the proper Fediverse (eg, they move from Threads to a different, freer home) before the Threads trap snaps shut and it defederates. Because it will defederate.

The issue is that Threads users will mostly be Instagram users, and a majority of Instagram users are insufferable for various reasons. So I don't think Threads will remain even partially federated for very long.
