Projects I would like to do:
1. Personal search engine
2. C# mastodon
3. Automated bare metal k8s cluster

Things I am spending my time on:
1. scrolling
2. deleting old useless files so one drive will stop whining

Imagine the utopia we could have if most of us weren't so tired and stressed that we could actually do things in our supposed free time, instead of recovering from the work week.
I bought a domain. That's like working on a project, right?
@jenniferplusplus Oh, absolutely. I’m working on, like…(logs into hover, counts)…10 projects right now.
@jenniferplusplus tfw no work week (living off of savings and trying to start a patreon&sponsorships&bugbounties&etc 'career') but still, still mostly procrastinating a lot lmao
@valpackett I've never tried self employment, but I have had to live off savings a few times. My experience is that it's at least as draining.
@jenniferplusplus I actually think that this is nefariously by design on the part of the wealthy and the corporations. A working class that's too tired to learn and too tired to do anything beyond watching mindless entertainment is a group easily conquered.
@jenniferplusplus capitalism functioning exactly as intended, keeping us in a constant state of burnout and crisis so we don't have the physical and emotional energy to fuck up the capitalists' shit
@jenniferplusplus Would be wonderful to take up a new hobby or leisurely pursuit such as tinker with an FPGA dev board, design and build a piece of furniture, lead a revolt against the labor-controlling class.
@jenniferplusplus Funny enough I've been playing with microk8s and an old 1L office PC cluster where I run OpenSearch :)
@jenniferplusplus Just because I like showing off my sub-£500 homelab cluster I recently built :)
@scottgal that is more or less my exact plan, down to running it on thinkcentres
@jenniferplusplus Get the least storage/ no storage. Of these 4 supplied SSDs failed rather quickly.
@jenniferplusplus I got it to learn how to do this stuff with physical machines. Even the disk failures told me a lot about what to look for / how stuff like local host file storage is a problem etc. Still a total noob (Helm still terrifies me) but learning!
@scottgal Yeah. If I wind up doing this seriously, I would want little to no storage on the compute nodes, and handle storage as its own dedicated concern. I would even want to explore a zero storage arrangement by network booting those nodes.
@jenniferplusplus Well I'll be following anything you post on how to do that with great interest :)
@scottgal I wouldn't hold your breath. I doubt it would be any time soon.
@jenniferplusplus "anything worth doing is worth half-assing" its not custom, but I run SearXNG in a docker container for this! https://docs.searxng.org/
Welcome to SearXNG — SearXNG Documentation (2026.3.3+65ae6ad90)

@Kooplah I've encountered searx, but a meta search engine isn't what I want. I want to start with my own index and build on top of it from there. I have a theory that, absent the advertising motive, it's possible to achieve near google-2023 search quality in a matter of days. And probably near google-2019 quality in a matter of months. But even if that's unrealistic, there's capabilities I want that become very achievable with my own search index/service. I encountered DevonAgent the other day, and I think I want roughly that, but as a service rather than a desktop app.
@jenniferplusplus that sounds sick! Good luck haha
@jenniferplusplus If you ever start working on that C# Mastodon part, I would love to contribute!

@runewake2 Interesting. Having collaborators definitely changes the math.

Although "port" is not exactly how I'm thinking about it. More like "compatible implementation" focused on being easier to operate, moderate, and administer.

What sort of contribution did you imagine?

@jenniferplusplus My experience is platform dev and developer experience oriented but I do a bit of everything. Making infrastructure delightful to use and manage is my jam.
@jenniferplusplus What’s a personal search engine?
@nick A search engine that I host myself. Because search is broken, and I would have a hard time doing worse than google and bing right now.
@jenniferplusplus not a fan of DuckDuckGo?
@nick DDG is bing
@jenniferplusplus oh. lol I can’t believe I never knew that. I definitely want to learn more about a personal search engine.
