Who here is NOT from Reddit? - sh.itjust.works

It seems to me that most people here are from Reddit or looking for alternatives to Reddit. I dislike social media in general, but this is like — if I can call it this — a niche community on the internet. That appeals to me somehow. It would be nice to see who’s here for the sake of Lemmy itself, like myself. [Edit] An addition: I could be wrong about most people being from Reddit. I don’t know that.

How did you find out about Lemmy?
On one of those fediverse explorers. I used Pleroma for a very short while before this. I just gave Lemmy a shot because it wasn't too popular.
Cool. I guess I know who to ask if I decide to dip my toes into one of the other fediverse platforms
that is true. for the most part, lemmy is designed for lemmy, unlike most of those platforms built for interconnectivity.
A comment on r/reddit from u/spez

I registered here a few days before the reddit blackout because the admin of my instance posted about lemmy on mastodon.

So, I'm not directly from reddit, but I am/was also an active reddit user

Were there any discussions about Lemmy on Reddit during that time?
There were plenty of mentions of Lemmy during the lead up to the blackout.
I didn't notice any mention of Lemmy on the subreddits that I followed
Oddly enough, though I saw Lemmy mentioned on several of my subs, the first one I saw it on was on r/WitchesVsPatriarchy. You wouldn't think.
Techy subs like linux ones were talking about lemmy for a solid week before the black out (could have been longer I wasn't counting)
I came from Reddit. Hoping to find and help build up a good alternative.
Just like on askreddit. “Not an X but…” I mean. Im from reddit too, so no complaints
I came here because of the reddit situation, but I didn't come from reddit. I just heard about of bunch of people thinking about going to lemmy and thought it might be fun to try it out.
that's the spirit
I've been following lemmy for a few years now, waiting for it to become a viable reddit replacement

that's interesting. but:

  • why is it that you waited for lemmy in particular?

  • why wait at all, if it was already up? in other words, what does viable mean to you, for you to have come here now? i doubt that the reddit traffic has decreased that significantly.

note to self:

° the bullet points look hideous.

° it's probably a jerboa thing.

° never use them again.

I like this forum/link aggregator form factor and i prefer open source software and federation, but there wasn't enough content and the app wasn't good enough to be as addictive as reddit. Now there's enough new content and jerboa is in a much more usable interface
I came because of Reddit shutting down 3rd party apps but I know about lemmy before. I like self hosting and have self hosted a matrix server for probably a year now, and when twitter blew up I heard about mastodon and searched for a Reddit version. However, I am lazy as shit so I didn't bother to set up an instance until a couple days after the reddit news. Honestly it was probably for the best, I probably would have been put of by the tankie stuff. I do feel lucky to have been here before 100 instances though, It was so barren before the influx of Redditors, rarely would a post hit 100 upvotes. It's incredible how much it has changed in the last few days.
that's pretty cool! i never got to see the barren version of lemmy. the version right now is the best state of lemmy for me. i like the cozy atmosphere. i know that will change, but by the time there's been a major change i'd be a part of the larger community of users. so that's great.
I actually had researched Lemmy before the reddit drama sense I do a fair amount of self-hosting. The reddit drama reminded me of this little corner. Maybe I’ll host my own instance when I beef up the server.
what do you host atm? (if you're willing to share)
Of course! On the front end for friends and family I host plex and overseerr. Obviously all the arrs and everything in the background to make that work easily for people like my parents. Also running Pi-hole, vaultwarden, couple different back up services, vpn, all that fun stuff. Next project is setting up something for ebooks and maybe lemmy.
that's really cool!
I am definitely here because of reddit, but I knew that it existed before. I also have averzy inactive mastodon account
I'm not, I did have a Reddit account years ago though, but I deleted it. I just came here because a friend told me about this new federated type platform where you only need one account and I thought it seemed cool so here I am.
