So.... what makes this server different? :) - sh.itjust.works

Title says it all!? I’m a reddit refuge and picked this instance because it’s A) Canadian (I’m in MN, so consider myself an honorary Canadian), and B) The clean energy thing. Applied to Beehaw but never heard back. Dittos on Lemmy.ML [http://Lemmy.ML]! So hoping this is going to be a great “home” away from Reddit for the foreseeable future. Cheers, and well done on the instance, admins!

Been here since the first day the server opened up: what makes this place different is our ruleset, admin and users.

Ruleset: Very simple and basic. @TheDude doesn't want to over-moderate, as far as I can tell. No need to tone-police or clamp down on what people can/can't say, as long as it's respectful. I really like that approach.

The admin: From his posts and the sheer rock-solid stability of this server and laid-back attitude, the dude abides. I know I'm not the only one who joined because of this post. Networking experts, server admins, devops guys, if they're anything like me, they look at that and think "Yup, this is where I wanna be".

Users: Early days yet, but so far the people here have been very laid-back, very nice, and helpful. Been trying to get all the newbies situated myself whenever I spot questions I can answer :) I'm hoping we can maintain this culture going forward.

In preparation for the Reddit June 12-14 Black-out - sh.itjust.works

As the reddit mods gets ready for the June 12-14 black-out, there some anticipation that an influx in user base will shift over to many of the lemmy instances as user seek out a home to post their internet memes and discuss their interests. In anticipation of this increased volume I will be growing our current instance from - 16 CPU - 8 GB ram to - 24 CPU - 64 GB ram This server is currently equipped with SSDs that are configured in a raid 10 array (NVMEs will come in the next gen that get deployed) Earlier today I also configured some monitoring that I’ll be watching closely in order to have a better understanding on how the lemmy platform does under stress (for science!) I’ll be sharing graphs and some other insights in this thread for everyone that is interested. Feel free to ask anything you might be interested in knowing more of! EDIT: I’ll be posting and updating the graphs in this main post periodically! As a dev, I joined a day before that post with much less criterion, then saw that post and felt very satisfied as you say. And they haven't let me down with the consistent updates and a very well oiled system that has handled massive growth with minimal side effects.
I admittedly checked it out because of the domain, but I've gone all in because of the awesome, friendly users like yourself. Thanks for being so welcoming!
I also liked seeing that the networking comm was one of the early ones here. In general the local community list from a few days ago left me with a good vibe.
