Sometimes Jewish texts might sound obsolete--like how they go on and on about “redeeming captives”--until they’re contextualized.

The cash bail system is, functionally, about the state holding innocent people hostage.

And GOP lawmakers are doubling down on it now--introducing more and more bills to trap more people and make prison reform is even more difficult.

On our obligation to the “great mitzvah”--then, and now:

Cash Bail and the "Great Mitzvah" of Redeeming Captives

Life is a Sacred Text
@TheRaDR
Can't imagine to whom redeeming captives sounds obsolete. Anyway מתיר אסורים is the name of a chassidic prison reform group
@TheRaDR
Corrextion: I *can* imagine, I just don't like to
@alter_kaker
While there are captives to be redeemed, anywhere, it remains relevant.
@TheRaDR
@TheRaDR Thank you for helping put this in perspective. I've definitely learned something, and I feel a stronger need to push for bail reform and other justice issues.

@TheRaDR

I think the answer for now should be to hold all Republican leaders under indictment, without bail.

@aka_quant_noir Nope. Justice must be achieved justly.
@TheRaDR Fair enough, fair enough. There are certainly vastly more people up and down the GOP chain of leadership doing dangerous things, some legal, some illegal.
@aka_quant_noir Appropriate and just consequences for unjust actions! Here for it.
