I mean, if I was a reddit infra engineer (and this is a long shot because I'm not), I would definitely use the "blackout day(s)" for some heavy maintenance or experiments that normally are to scary to do on a high loaded live server.
Webdev here. When I am blessed with a "we are closed" day on some clients' websites, I drop everything else so I can get some database cleanup in.
