Absolutely fuck Reddit. @christianselig is amazing and I cannot believe they are slandering him this way. https://reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/144f6xm/apollo_will_close_down_on_june_30th_reddits/
📣 Apollo will close down on June 30th. Reddit’s recent decisions and actions have unfortunately made it impossible for Apollo to continue. Thank you so, so much for all the support over the years. ❤️

Hey all, It's been an amazing run thanks to all of you. Eight years ago, I posted in the Apple subreddit [about a Reddit app I was looking for...

@film_girl Just signed up to a Lemmy instance (Midwest.social) and started TestFlight-ing Mlem.

It’s a bad year for social media. Can Facebook be next?

@nofunberg If facebook came next, I'd say it's been a great year!

Thanks to facebook, my mother fell into some weird conspiracy hole, and now she's full on into q-anon talking points and other BS.

@grovecastle Oh, I meant bad for social media, good for people!
@film_girl @christianselig Spez is doing an AMA about the API changes tomorrow. Wonder how that will go 🤔

Join our CEO tomorrow to discuss the API

Reddit CEO, u/spez, will be here tomorrow to host an AMA about the latest API updates, including accessibility, mod bots, and third-party mod tools.

@popey @christianselig well, if he doesn’t like what people ask him, he might just change their comments.
@film_girl @popey @christianselig probably he’s going to cry about how evil Apollo “are” and how they threatened them
@popey @film_girl @christianselig maybe they can bring back the secret Santa exchange so we can send him a big bag of shite. Edit: This is not a threat 🤣
@film_girl @christianselig
lordy there are tapes, how is Reddit going to backtrack this one?
@runningwolfie @christianselig I’m not speaking for Christian, but I think anything short of a full-throated apology, capitulation on terms and a contract not to change terms again for X period would make him willing to trust/work with these lying sacks of shit.
@film_girl @christianselig Best they can do is a post blaming 3rd party developers for the difficulties in communicating
@runningwolfie @film_girl @christianselig Knowing Reddit, something something AI something

@film_girl @christianselig In-fucking-credible. You almost get conspiratorial from the chain of events, as if the CEO even held the people Reddit app devs talked to in the dark.

What a horrible human being.

@film_girl @christianselig When they decided to publicize the API call amount, in a "per day" comparison, without going into more granular detail, I knew immediately they were being vindictive and evil.

If it was truly even about the API call limit, they would've flagged that privately LONG BEFORE this.

The real answer is they used the API limit as a false way so that they could discretely target the largest apps, killing them off ASAP.

@film_girl @christianselig Yep, the same goes for every third party developer that they have screwed over these past few weeks.

RIF's shutting down at the very same date as well. https://old.reddit.com/r/redditisfun/comments/144gmfq/rif_will_shut_down_on_june_30_2023_in_response_to/

Also It's CEO and co-founder Steve Huffman is doing a AMA tomorrow, that'll be chaotic and censorship heavy... https://old.reddit.com/r/reddit/comments/144ho2x/join_our_ceo_tomorrow_to_discuss_the_api/

@film_girl @christianselig it’s sad really. They seem to be closing in on any kind of third party tool made by passionate devs who put blood sweat and tears into making the platform more comfortable to use. As a subreddit mod I can’t even empathise on how important those tools are to us. There will be a blackout protest against Reddit’s new policy; I just hope that enough subs participate to actually make them listen. (But I doubt it.)
@film_girl @christianselig Its been really disappointing seeing this develop. The people building reddit and many of the communities there are delightful. I hope their leadership is able to figure themselves out before all of that collapses.
@film_girl @christianselig @caseyliss yeah. I don’t use reddit. I use Apollo.
@film_girl @christianselig I wonder what Aaron Swartz would think of what Reddit — the company, the site, and the community — is like these days.
@jochenwolters @christianselig I don’t like those kinds of invocations at all, but he was only involved very briefly (and as part of a YC mandated merger rather than it being his idea) and was fired relatively early on. Again, I don’t like these invocations, but I don’t think he’d be surprised as he wasn’t a fan or supporter when he was alive
@film_girl @christianselig Thank you for sharing these details, as I wasn’t aware of them.
@film_girl @christianselig I’d love to see a 180 here, but right now I expect I will be blocking Reddit from my networks and devices on 7/1. I’d have paid something to use an app, but I will black hole the hole thing rather than even indirectly support all of this.
@film_girl @christianselig Reddit has sold out, and the shareholders are calling the shots.
@film_girl @christianselig @Gerego ditching 3rd party clients? So long Reddit.
@film_girl @simonbs @christianselig It’s disgraceful. Doubt he’ll answer questions about it at his AMA.
@film_girl
Really sucks that our public spaces on the internet are run by assholes.
@film_girl I’ve always worked for corporations, I have no problem with free-market economics in general, and honestly this place has yet to convince me that alternative approaches have the answer either, but it’s very frustrating for the internet to be so failing at its potential at the moment.
@film_girl Great, Huffman was explicitly following Elon’s lead, so not exactly a coincidence.
@film_girl @christianselig Centralized social networks suck. :(
