"The court heard testimony of the traumatic nature of the moderators’ work on a day-to-day basis. “I remember my first experience witnessing manslaughter on a live video … I unconsciously stood up and screamed. For a minute, I almost forgot where I was and who I was. Everything went blank,” read one of the written testimonies."

‘A watershed’: Meta ordered to offer mental health care to moderators in Kenya

Trauma experienced by staff at Nairobi Facebook hub recognised in legal ruling that may have global implications

The Guardian
@timnitGebru "Today’s ruling is a watershed, and not just against Facebook,” said Crider, lauding the interim judgment. “All social media giants should take note – the days of hiding behind outsourcing to exploit your key safety workers are over.”
@timnitGebru How many crimes is that organisation going to get away with? They need to be shut down.

“Instagram has allowed users to search for terms that its own algorithms know could be linked to SG-CSAM, with a pop-up screen for users warning that “these results may contain images of child sexual abuse”. The screen gives users the option to “see results anyway”. Instagram has removed the option for users to view the content after being contacted by the Journal.” Speechless.

@Timnit Gebru (she/her) Thank you for pointing this out. We tend to forget that it's actual people doing this work and that it's not automated. I suspect AI training will have the same result?
@Jo Jitsu I am worried that the people who work with teaching the ai what is right or wrong might be doing so under the same terrible conditions as the moderators.
@timnitGebru Making the less wealthy of the world more traumatized by cruelty & perversions of the ‘developed’ economies. This has always made my stomach turn & hurt my heart. Companies should not get away with this exploitation.
