Legit sad about his passing, I hoped to meet him once so he could call me a #jabroni & needlessly swear at me. Hated the guy as a kid but recognized that he was the closest thing to someone like me in the #WWF (not ideal since he was a heel). He was required watching, whether he was in the ring or cutting a promo as he felt more ‘real’ than most wrestlers.

He’s also a textbook case for pro wrestlers needing a union, healthcare, and retirement because his slew of injuries made old age painful & difficult.

Rest in power, Sheiky.

The Iron Sheik, pro wrestling legend and Hall of Famer, dies at 81 - ESPN

Plus, he catapulted #HulkHogan into the stratosphere by putting him over when he lost the belt to Hogan. He does not get enough credit for helping Hogan make millions and live a cushy life.

(In
#ProWrestling terms, putting someone ‘over’ is to make them look good. He made Hogan look legit by losing to him and making it seem like he was a very difficult opponent for whom Hogan had to dig extra deep to defeat. Sheiky was hated by the crowd too (his whole character leaned into political tensions & xenophobia) so that made Hogan’s win even more emotional.

This is slightly different from the general pro wrestling term ‘over,’ which means fans care about a wrestler, either as a face (hero) or a heel (villain).)
