I’m a Jaz drive hoarder.

@mroach oh, cool! I recently got my first one (2GB, looks quite unused) but I had to get 5 (or 6?) media to find one with 0 read/write errors. the others have anywhere between 6 to 20+ dead sectors. One (new, sealed) was even entirely dead, ... Did you have the same experience?

@ReneRebe I haven’t done exhaustive disk checks like that. Did you do a full disk format to discover errors?

Last time I had them setup, I created a ZFS pool and it worked great 😬
I’ve only got 3 disks, and they’re the 1GB version. They were all new when I got them.

@mroach because I knew about the "troubled history" (we also had one at a job long time ago), I started with running dd >/dev/null when I got them. Started fast like 6.xMB/s? but started to error around >600MB. I then immediately run ddrescue on all media to get an overall picture of what was left. The one dead newly sealed disk was 1GB :-(

@ReneRebe I was surprised my disks worked given the history of them. IIRC half the battle is having a drive that doesn’t crash the head into the disk. Maybe I’m lucky there?

I’ll setup the zpool again and try filling up the disks and see what I get.

This was last time! Very fun stuff.

@mroach yeah, maybe the 1GB drivers where half as sensitive to disk errors ;-) Beautiful computer case you got there, it looks it is not the UltraSPARC flavor or is the Intel sticker only for fun? My new-ish looking 2G drive can read one 2GB disk and one or two 1GB disk w/o errors, so I hope the drive should be mostly ok, ...

@ReneRebe It’s a Sun Ultra 24: one of the only Intel ATX systems they ever made. It’s a real beauty!

After that pic was taken, I swapped the guts for modern hardware since a Core 2 Quad just isn’t that useful.

Hopefully the Jaz drive is ok. I wouldn’t be surprised if the disks themselves are degrading over time. They’re not even air sealed like a normal HDD. Sad :/

@mroach yes, a true beauty! I was watching Ultra 45 listings for years. I should have got one when the 2x1.6 GHz UltraSPARC ones were "only" 5-600€ ;-) I recently got myself a Sun T4-1 though. That is a beauty, too; and probably all I need for the next years of SPARC computing ;- ) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoKGVBeotPq/

@ReneRebe That is a real beauty! Do you have it in a rack? Sun set such a high bar for hardware design and operation. I love all the labelling, guides, sane layout, toolless access.

Compaq was also ahead of their time with that. I love my little Deskpro EN. Such a joy to work on.

@mroach i don't have a rack yet, i stack them in a office corner :-/ probably should get one sooner than later ...
@mroach That looks suspiciously like my rack. Are you living in my basement?!?!
@mroach I’m glad I’m not alone 😅
