Pittsburgh: β€œOnce the lights are fully converted, the city will finally be in compliance with the Dark Sky Ordinance enacted by former Mayor Bill Peduto in 2021. That ordinance was an effort to reduce light pollution, which often limits the ability to see stars in the city and can occasionally affect wildlife habits.” https://www.post-gazette.com/local/city/2023/06/06/pittsburgh-led-street-lights-city-council/stories/202306060103

@StellaLunaObs I thought LED lamps put out more light pollution than other lamps? https://www.wlrn.org/news/2023-03-06/led-streetlights-are-energy-efficient-but-are-they-environmentally-friendly-its-complicated

Are these different and less light pollution intensive?

LED streetlights are energy efficient, but are they environmentally friendly? It's complicated

LED streetlights are making South Florida's skies and streets brighter. Although they save energy, the light they emit poses a problem for humans, for wildlife, for our entire ecosystem.

@DanielleAiko Depends upon the color temperature and brightness. Some cities unwisely choose blue-white LEDs which are bad enough already due to the light scattering property of blue light. Add to that too bright an intensity and yes, far worse light pollution! Gotta be done right with β€œwarm” color temperatures and controlled brightness β€” the right balance saves energy, taxpayer funds, and the night.
@StellaLunaObs that's a great point. My old town back in Ohio just went for the blue white lights and it pretty much washed out the sky almost entirely despite being a small town
@DanielleAiko Too common a result of the conversion. In some instances citizens were so angry about the results of the bright (white) LED conversion, the municipalities were forced to swap out the offending new lights for warm color temperature units. An expensive mistake in more ways than one!
