I think our air conditioning unit has packed it in after 23 years. Good thing it's not hot outside.

Oh, wait...

I hope you're cool wherever you are. I mean, I know you're cool. 😎

G'night, folks. Sleep well.

@BrownKnowser so sorry.

It might be worth it for you to get an energy audit and put in a heat pump, I've heard the heat pump is only about $1000 more than the AC, and the subsidies might cover the difference or more.

After Friday, temps looking much more reasonable.

I'm waiting for my 29 year old AC to die. It doesn't really keep up. I'm at the point of making appointments to gather estimates and if they look good, I'll put it out of its misery.

😎

My 24yr old AC unit just died;
We’re exploring the heat pump situation too!;

nothing will be fast enough for this current air quality situation;

@idoclosecuts @BrownKnowser oh no...

Mine burns through a starter capacitor every 5-10y. Maybe yours is due? That's a quick fix.

Would love to hear how the heat pump turns out for you. Would it integrate into your existing furnace in place of the central AC cooling coils, if you have that setup?

@johnefrancis @BrownKnowser the AC technician said they couldn't fix, no refrigerant left and the machine is too old;

I don't know if that's *true*, but he left; :)

As for heat pump info - your question includes more 'unknown to me jargon' that apparently, I'm going to learn soon... :)

@idoclosecuts @johnefrancis My AC was the same, with no refrigerant. I was told that there was now a ban on this time of system so it couldn't be fixed.

We haven't had a follow-up call from our repair company so we haven't bought a replacement system yet. From what I understand, our furnace would be a secondary unit to a heat pump that will only kick in when it gets to cold for the heat pump to handle.

@BrownKnowser @idoclosecuts
my old AC has the old refrigerant, which is no longer available. There is a compatible replacement, but a top-up would require an "entire can", which was $900, several years ago. So, just not worth it for residential AC.

I'm interested in learning how the systems are physically arranged. Most heat pumps I've seen are not "central", in that they have multiple wall-mounted indoor coils, instead of one big in the ductwork, with the gas furnace, like central AC.

@BrownKnowser @idoclosecuts it sounds like we're all going to be finding out soon.

I have an arrangement with the owner of Francis Plumbing & Heating, if you want to explore it, I'll let him know and maybe it will be a small discount.

@johnefrancis @idoclosecuts I've also been dealing with Francis P&H. They replaced my furnace in March and years ago installed a tankless water heater. They promised to give me a good deal on an AC or heat pump.
