AFF4 adoption seems to have stalled (maybe? I would love counter examples). The C library certainly has some warts. AFF4 always seemed overly ambitious to me, a Second System Effect example if there ever was one (I mean, RDF is itself a second system example).

Guidance/OpenText promised to release an actual file spec for Ex01 but to my knowledge they never did. (Again, would love to be wrong.)

So I am wondering this morning whether it makes sense to take E01 and extend it with a few straightforward features:
- modern hash algorithms for overall image hash
- sparse regions
- modern codecs (zstd, lz4)

Thoughts?

@codeslack I just brought this problem up to our team a few weeks back. I have a lot of thoughts on this problem. Give me some time after work to write them down.
@jtsylve cool. I am definitely torn and was told today by an engineer it would be better just to use aff4.
