EDITED: For those who haven't heard Mariam Aly of Columbia Psychology announced that she would not be promoted to Associate Professor w/o tenure, and she would not be put up for tenure. See her tweet:
Today I learned that
@Columbia
will not be promoting me or putting me up for tenure. I have multiple active grants (including an R01 and a CAREER award) plenty of publications, a teaching award, and a history of DEI advocacy. Open to all opportunities in and out of academia.

It's very surprising, for sure! And I agree that given the known facts, perplexing. I very much appreciate that you are orchestrating to make sure that all is/was/will be fair.
@NicoleCRust My initial post, which was based on Mariam's tweet might have been misleading. Mariam has said she was told that she had basically no chance of tenure and should apply elsewhere, though this has not yet been conveyed in writing. She has been open in her communications about this in case people want to know more. My doc was just for supporters to sign up, but we should wait for more clarity on what is happening before deciding what, if anything, should be done.
@NicoleCRust Also, I have no say on how either Mariam or the department will handle things. The twitter scene has (predictably) moved in an unproductive and potentially harmful direction. So I don't want to comment on the department's actions. My main concern is how this will impact her professionally and personally.
@charanranganath the lack of transparency in the promotion and tenure process perpetuates inequity at institutions that are perceived as elite. Mariam would already have tenure in any decent department based on her record. I just have to add Columbia Psychology to my list of departments that I would advise students against applying to (and refuse to submit letters to)
@charanranganath Weird. I know people who've appealed (and won) after going through the tenure process and being denied, but being denied before you even start the process? What's up with that? That sounds like there are departmental issues, that are not related to productivity or scholarship...

@charanranganath @mariam

This sounds like an opportunity. Mariam (who has done some really great work BTW!) should consider other programs who are willing to support her in her career journey.

@adredish @charanranganath Very interesting!! Thank you for sharing this. Love to see diversity highlighted -- I do think I can contribute in that domain with my DEI efforts and identities!
