President Biden, in a national address from the Oval Office, says the bipartisan budget agreement is vital to keeping the full faith and credit of the country and is a "crisis averted."
"No one got everything they wanted but the American people got what they needed," President Biden tells the nation.
"I want to commend Speaker McCarthy," adds President Biden. "Both sides operated in good faith."

@w7voa

Are you fucking kidding me.

This is 100% not true. McCarthy is an extortionist and used the debt ceiling like a gun to extort the government & everyone in the country. By definition not good faith.

Biden gratuitously doing PR for McCarthy after rolling over so badly to him is grotesque.

@chargrille @w7voa I wonder, does Biden acting like McCarthy was reasonable actually HURT McCarthy with the Republican base? Like if he said he was an economic terrorist (which is the truth) would that actually make it look like McCarthy successfully owned the libs? Maybe I’m ascribing 4d chess to the guy, admittedly.

@paulmather007 @w7voa

No. This entire debt ceiling debacle, including Biden failing to solve the problem with the Democratic majority when we had it, is a win for the GOP, and they know it. It's a redux of his screwup in 2012.

“The reason he has such good relationships with Republicans in the Senate is he never hesitates to put aside the highest priorities of his base in the interests of compromise,” the Republican operative said. (2019)

@chargrille @paulmather007 @w7voa
Official democrats have not been a majority in the senate - they needed an independent. Under Biden Democrats have not come close to the 60 votes to stop a filibuster. Actual democrats have been a minority.

@DavidPenington

I'm sorry for being blunt, but, give me a break. If you have time to monitor US elections from Australia, you have time to know that Biden spent his entire first year throwing cold water on filibuster reform, that Democrats had a trifecta in 2021 & 2022, including a lame duck session where CPC urged leadership to remove GOP's debt ceiling gun. Now, we have a 51-vote Senate majority (+ VP) with power to remove the filibuster. Leadership lacks the will.

@paulmather007 @w7voa

@chargrille
It sounds like you expect Joe Manchin & Kyrsten Sinema to both vote for both removing the filibuster and removing the debt ceiling, if Biden uses "leadership". I doubt it.
I don't know who you mean by CPC.
Criticising Biden for not achieving things that needed a solid majority in the small-state gerrymandered to achieve seems like the sort if thing the Republicans want you to say - to discourage people from voting Democrat.

@DavidPenington

You think I understand a lot less about my country's politics than I do.

Also, "leadership" is how we in the US refer to party leadership. Not the abstract quality of leadership.

@DavidPenington

Also, you should know that we are Democrats, but we "vote Democratic" or, "for the Democratic ticket." Not "vote Democrat." That is GOP terminology, intended by the GOP to be a slur to irritate Democrats, that Gingrich et al. began maliciously spreading in the 1990s. Unfortunately, ignorance spreads faster than knowledge & now it is widely misused.
