Suggest me...anything? - Beehaw

It’s the weekend for me, and I’d just love some suggestions. Movies? TV shows? Coffee? Holiday destinations? Software? Apps? Books? Something new to make for dinner? Websites? It’s up to you, but I’d love some (hopefully) random suggestions from all of you to look into something new!

I recently just found out about https://www.shadertoy.com/ and it's a really cool and fun way to experiment and learn about shaders. You can experiment and make some really cool visual programs using the site.
hey this actually looks really interesting, thanks!
Start playing factorio. You'll lose your weekend and the next week. Runs on most PCs.
If you have Amazon Prime, check out Undone
The silo book series and its new tv show, Silo. Fucking phenomenal series of books

Should I start with the books, or the show?

Post apocalyptic is the right alley for me.

I started with the books. The show runs pretty closely with a few deviations for dramatic effect.

I also recommend

World war z by max brooks The passage series by Justin Cronin

Thanks, I've got the first book ready to go. I'm looking forward to it!
Go read Percy Jackson, go play Final Fantasy 14, go watch The Good Place and go listen to 100 Gecs
Solid recommendations on all fronts. I haven't played FF14, so is this the time?
It's always the time to play FF14 :) there's a free trial before buying the game, it's goes all the way from the beginning to the end of the first extension. Basically, you can try the game by playing 100 hours for free
listen to this song, I have thousands in my repertoire for you.

Ethiopian food! If you’re lucky enough to have nearby access, go support your local restaurant and get yourself a vegetarian platter. You will NOT regret it.

If you don’t have access or are vegan, I’ve had good luck making it as well. Here are a few recipes to start:

  • Niter Kibbeh - this is the staple oil for many Ethiopian dishes. I use the same ingredients, but rather than go through all the toasting and steps, I just throw everything in the slow cooker on low for a few hours. Use this in recipes and drizzle a tiny bit over your finished dish just before serving.
  • Quick Injera - this is a serviceable approximation of the real deal with common household ingredients. If you haven’t had Ethiopian food before, this is basically a thin, lightly sour pancake, and your utensil you’ll scoop up your tasty stews with. It’s also the base (literally) of combination platters. I haven’t had the fortitude to order teff and try to make the real stuff yet. This recipe is nowhere near the taste, texture, or complexity of a proper injera, but it’s good enough that I’ve made it multiple times to help with cravings.
  • Kik Alicha - I love this recipe. It’s yellow split peas, which is one of my least favorite things in my pantry, and yet it ends up tasting incredible. I like how simple it is once you have the niter kibbeh as well. This recipe really shows off the niter kibbeh flavors. Don’t forget to drizzle some on just before serving.
Vegan Niter Kibbeh (Ethiopian Spiced Oil)

Niter Kibbeh (Nit'r qibe) is a spiced, clarified butter that builds amazing flavor in Ethiopian dishes like shiro and doro wat. This vegan Niter Kibbeh is made with olive oil and is healthier.

The book The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. That book left me lost in thought for weeks.

The first thing I always suggest is my favorite band, so I guess I will here too!

Interpol! My introductory of my top favorite songs and songs that worked for getting people I know into the band.

Let's start with the "worker" songs:

Top 5 Personal Faves:

  • Heinrich Maneuver
  • Possibly the first Interpol song I remember listening to. Upbeat and fun.

  • Safe Without
  • Catchy and captures insanity pretty well. I can't really help but to picture that spongebob scene in my mind. I don't need it....

  • All The Rage Back Home
  • A go to song that's a party-er and emotional all at once.

  • Pioneer to the Falls
  • Amazing surfer-esque aesthetic with powerful timing and lyrics.

  • Untitled
  • My all time favorite song EVER. I have a deep personal connection with this one.

But really, you can't really go wrong with them. It was hard to make a top 5.

Thank you so much! I haven't listened to Interpol in forever, this takes me back to my Uni days! Going to play through some of these now :)
If you're looking for coffee, try looking for a local shop that brews with single origin beans (bonus if they roast the coffee in house). I'd recommend trying single origin espresso, a pour over, or a cortado/gibraltr (roughly half espresso, half steamed milk) if straight coffee isn't your thing.

    Two small ideas:

Uncanny Magazine is a bimonthly indie sci-fi & fantasy magazine: short stories, poetry, and essays. I never know what to expect from its stories. They're often evocative, engaging, and weird, and they make me look at the world in a different way. Don't read it through. It's best savored.

Tempeh Lettuce Tomato Sandwich: I recommend these strips if you can find them in your local co-op, they don't taste anything like bacon but they're great –but the really important bit is whatever tempeh you get, pan fry it in slices. Pan-fried tempeh has a lovely nutty, almost popcorn-like taste and a satisfying bite to it. A dab of sriracha makes it 👌

Go to a Starbucks and ask if you can have an ice water. Don't buy anything because f union busting.

But they all give out the ice water for free, no purchase necessary - they won't even look at you funny or anything - and I swear it's absurdly delicious ice water. Great for a walk on a hot day. Try it and see. :)

    • The Expanse - best sci fi show in recent years
    • Techno parties/raves - find one that has Funktion One speakers, be transported to a different world by the sheer volume. Bring ear plugs.
I will always updoot the expanse. Incredible show, even better books.

    Tv: black mirror!

Amazing show where every episode focuses on a different cast / story. New season coming soon too.

Find a local Food Not Bombs chapter and go there one day to cook and give food for those in need
I just saw the movie Game Night, and immensely enjoyed it. A good non-raunchy comedy film. Phew it has been too long.
Do you know any other non raunchy comedies? Something I enjoyed is Tucker and Dale Vs Evil

'Palm Springs' comes to mind I've heard good things about the new DnD movie

Don't have much recommendations, sorry. I'll check out Tucker and Dale, thanks for the recommend

The DND movie is on my list. Will give it a shot. Hope you enjoy Tucker and Dale. Thanks
For the record: the same writer/director duo also just did the Dungeons and Dragons movie which is similarly a very, very good time.
Another tv show: The Bear. Haven't finished the season yet but it's quite refreshing in multiple ways.
Play Xonotic for an adrenaline rush. :D
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Been watching it a lot recently and its really fun. I like having it on while I play Stellaris or Endless Space 2.
An okay place to start if I've never seen any Star Trek?

In my opinion, I would start with Next Gen. Season 1 was a real piece of crap, but it quickly got better after that. Ive heard a lot of people argue that you should skip it, but Season 1 establishes a lot of important characters and concepts that come back frequently. Heres a list of episodes that I think you should watch from Season 1. All of these episodes are important for what they establish in the world, and cause a couple are actually pretty good. Also you shouldnt skip Season 1, cause its fun to see the growth. Episode 1: Encounter at Farpoint Episode 9: Hide and Q Episode 12: Datalore Episode 14: 11001001 Episode 19: Heart of Glory Episode 20: The Arsenal of Freedom Episode 21: Symbiosis Episode 22: Skin of Evil Episode 25: The Neutral Zone

Season 2 has a lot of good episodes and a lot of bad episodes, and Season 3 on out is some of the best television in history. And the best part is, cause its serialized tv if you dont like an episode just skip it! But you should probably watch these^^

I know it seems weird to jump around, I just dont want you to experience Episode 2: The Naked Now.
