Regarding cooling and computing hardware, fuck manufacturers of drive enclosures that include no cooling.
I've killed drives with that garbage before I narrowed that down as the cause.

@lispi314 I have a friend who's addicted to the company that likes to make computers as thin as possible and doesn't believe in fans and she's had so many of them die within a couple years from basically being overworked/left on too long.
I expect that from the guy on Ali Express literally reusing chips from the garbage, not the company that charges multiple thousands for brand new hardware.
@indigoparadox Yeah, I also had hardware die because of copycats that thought that was a nice trendy thing to do.
It's one of the many things that has reinforced my general stance on the #PortableComputer form factor vs laptops (https://mastodon.top/@lispi314/110249596438121252).
#LaptopsWereAMistake. The #PortableComputer form-factor with #standard part #compatibility, proper CPU sockets, standard memory and standard input sockets were better. The battery should never be tightly coupled to a given machine, it prevents #reusability (it should also be external & detached for safety reasons). A standard 100~120/220~240v input socket means you can use any given portable battery pack. Anything else just gives manufacturers free rein to rip-off customers. #Hardware
@lispi314 Actually, this reminds me of another anecdote...
I used to be jr. sysadmin @ a mid-size accounting firm. We were doing a refresh & offered a choice between a thicker 17" model that was rock solid and a featherweight 15" model which would BSOD every 2 hours or so(!)
We were up front about the issue and trying to find a solution but I wasn't hopeful. The HW just didn't like our DB SW or w/e.
Most picked the smaller/unstable option, saying they had to travel to client sites a lot.
😩
@indigoparadox 😩, indeed.
I partly blame the non-pragmatism of business attire for this one.
For some reason backpacks are unthinkable with that, nevermind when it makes a lot more sense than briefcases (your back can take a lot more weight comfortably than your arms for most people). Vexingly, the same applies to wheeled travel cases (think Pelican) that also would mitigate weight and cumbersomeness issues.
