So, I guess I'm done with reddit...

A pity. I met a lot of amazing people via reddit (including
@supakaity), and many of those communities have been important to me over the 10 years I've had an account there...

But between deliberately killing off 3rd party apps and their lackluster approach to hate speech, it's time to go.

The fediverse has taught me I don't need to endure hate speech find my communities and my people, so, I'm done.

@ada @supakaity Welp just cancelled premium.
@ada @supakaity $20 million upfront just for Chris to connect the app? That's a $20 million shot to their own foot.
@ada yeah there's no way I'll ever use their shitty official app. I might keep using reddit web on desktop, but if RiF stops working then I'll just give up on mobile.

@hazel @ada Same, I've been doing most of my redditting with Apollo on my ipad, and Relay on my phone when I'm on the go.

If all that's left is desktop and shitty official apps... well... yeah, no.

@hazel Ironically, I was using the official app, but somewhere recently, it stopped showing the posters name in the thread view, and it stopped showing the parent comment when you looked at a reply, and I couldn't work out how that was meant to improve anything. That was enough to get me away from the official app and back to a 3rd party app
@ada @supakaity from Reddit to Mastodon, what a jump! I hear you tho. loooong ago I was the moderator of a forum over there (a "subreddit" in their lingo) and being a mod was Not Fun. and unpaid. utter madness combo haha
@synlogic @[email protected] It's a bit more complex than that for me.

I was on lemmy, calckey, reddit and kbin at the same time, but now it will just be lemmy, calckey and kbin with no reddit :)

I am/was the mod of a couple of relative popular subs on reddit, but enough is enough
@ada Sounds like a good time for me to give Lemmy a go again, I just signed up on the blahaj.zone instance.

The last Lemmy instance I was on was very loosely moderated so it didn't go very well and I ended up leaving
@nyaa I watch the lemmy and this instance pretty closely. The only thing is due to the way lemmy works, it's harder for me to see things if they don't get reported, so please report anything that needs to be looked at, and I'll deal with it!
@ada
Yup, this functionally ends my relationship with Reddit, too. It's a a betrayal that we could see coming in slow motion over years now, but it's a betrayal none the less.

Groups can't get widespread adoption here fast enough. I'll happily pay for a Reddit app repurposed for the fediverse, and contribute to a kbin/Lemmy/whatever site that hosts groups I'm interested in. Or even set one up myself, if I'm feeling self-hating enough.
@supakaity
@kichae @[email protected] We have a lemmy instance running. We tried to set a kbin instance up a while back and gave up, but it has progressed since then, and after using kbin.social, I'm somewhat in love with kbin, so once I can convince @supakaity to try round two installing it, we will hopefully have a kbin instance too :)
@ada
I also have a Lemmy instance up, but it's just for kicking the tires. It doesn't quite have the traditional forum features, that I can find, that I'd be looking for. I need to add some issues to their tracker.

I've wanted to do the same playing with kbin, but I'm not familiar enough with Docker or the prerequite packages to actually get it to build successfully.

At some point I just need to reinitialize my VPS and get everything running on Docker, but that won't be any time soon.
@supakaity

@ada @supakaity

I always found reddit very confusing and overwhelming! But I'm older, so....lol

@ada @supakaity I really thought that the memory of the Digg-fiasco was burned into Reddit's DNA but I guess even the most important lessons are forgotten with time.
I could manage with old.reddit.com for a while but it would be dumb to rely on any of it at this point. So I guess it will be good-bye for me too after 15 years.
The Fediverse is not be perfect but it's ours!
@zrzz @[email protected] Reddit is on the verge of an IPO, so the enshitification was inevitable unfortunately :\
