I was fortunate to see #SteelyDan on their hometown 10-night stand in 2016 at Manhattan's #BeaconTheater. #WalterBecker was in great form; no sign that he would shortly stop touring. They were doing a different complete album every night. I caught the 'Aja' night. Doesn't get much better.
@WilliamRobert Have seen them nine times...last one was after Walter died..
@jadevol #ChuckRainey or #TomBarney on bass? I mean, my god they had great players. Any faves you want to name? Any fave shows?
@WilliamRobert Tom Barney...probably my favorite was the third time seeing them at Pine Knob...had a young beautiful female friend (24 years younger) who really played up the old guy/young woman theme that runs through their music...bought lawn seats and it started to storm so they moved us down to about 15 rows back from the stage...I think it was around 2003...Before Cornelious Bumpus died...had the hots for Carolyn Leonhart....never saw a bad show...
@jadevol I think Michael and Carolyn Leonhart were in the 2016 band. I'm a fan of Michael since he co-produced the #DonaldFagen solo album, Sunken Condos--just killer. I agree, never a bad show.
@WilliamRobert listen to "Sunken Condos" almost every weekend on the bike....either that or "The Nightfly" Donald just released two live albums last fall...one is "The Nightfly" yep, they've been with them since the first time I saw them in 2000...when Donald was inducted into the jazz hall of fame it was just he and Carolyn doing "Florida Room" on stage
@jadevol Listened to a live '93 version of IGY today, real loud. Probably rate that as my number one Dan song at the moment. I know The Nightfly is technically solo #Donald, but I believe #Walter was co-producer. Anyway, just a great song. That and Bad Sneakers, which should have been a number one single if there was justice in the world.
@WilliamRobert Walter played on it, too...just like he did on Kamakiriad..."Bad Sneakers" is the first song on one of my SD playlists followed by "Black Cow"...I think my favorite is "Pretzel Logic"...only saw them do that once...first song of an encore...every time I hear "IGY" I think "where's my spandex jacket, Donald?" "Doctor WU" and it's range of emotions gets me every time I hear it....
@jadevol Agree--Dr. Wu is a deep track, musically and lyrically. Just the chord progression before the line 'Katy lies' is something else. Listened closely to it yesterday and it sends chills.
@WilliamRobert yeah, the line"Katy lied, I was halfway crucified, I was on the other side of no tomorrows" I get chills when I hear that song, too...
