OpenAI announces a competition for ten $100k grants to come up with democratic principles for the governance of AI. On the face of it, this is appealing. Love democracy. But just like tech companies begging for regulation, this can also be seen as an abrogation of their own responsibility to make their own ethical decisions about how they govern themselves first.

Democratic inputs to AI

Our nonprofit organization, OpenAI, Inc., is launching a program to award ten $100,000 grants to fund experiments in setting up a democratic process for deciding what rules AI systems should follow, within the bounds defined by the law.

Historically, there hasn't been much luck with industries governing themselves, and if they are right about the risks that AI might pose, I'm glad to see them encourage regulation. Now, we'll see if SCOTUS will let them be regulated by an agency of experts rather than by direct legislation.
